The ‘best interests of the child’ is the most important consideration.

Parenting involves many issues and constant communication. A Parenting Plan will help you structure your time, develop strategies to communicate effectively with your partner, and make sure the needs of your children are met.

Separation can be very stressful for children, and for parents. Remember: Most children love and want to maintain a relationship with their parents.

Parents can minimize harm by modeling respectful behavior, accepting differences in their parenting styles, and resolving any disagreements when the children are not present or able to overhear.

The terms ‘custodial parent’ and ‘access parent’ are still used. However, the law encourages the concept of ‘shared parenting’, where each family creates their own Parenting Plan about how they will share parenting responsibilities based on their unique situation.
